ABOUT CARA

I am a therapist with over a decade of experience working with individuals, couples, families and children. My work with a Toronto based non-profit agency has given me the opportunity to work with people from various backgrounds, cultures and sexual orientations. I have many years of experience helping individuals with issues such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress, work conflict, grief, separation, relationship issues, extended family and parenting. I work with clients to make sense of their feelings, develop new ideas for coping, and feel more encouraged and empowered. I have successfully helped numerous clients return to work after being away due to stress and mental health related issues.

I also have a strong passion for working with couples who are experiencing conflict, loss of connection or overcoming an affair. Many of the couples I have met often feel stuck and discouraged in their relationships. I work with couples to help them break the cycle of conflict, repair the trust and rebuild their connection.

For others, separation has been the step they need to resolve the conflict or give them a chance to find happiness. I have helped many people adjust to separation, grieve the loss of their relationship and work toward new beginnings. My experience counselling individuals, leading groups and running seminars has given me an opportunity to help parents manage conflict within their co-parenting relationships and help their children adjust to separation.

I integrate client-centered therapy with other modalities including ACT- Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative, Gottman Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Solution-Focused therapy.

I am always enhancing my knowledge and experience through continuing education at workshops, conferences and reading. I also participate in clinical supervision and peer supervision to collaborate and continue to learn from others.

The Personal Side

I know what it is like to live with self-doubt, uncertainty and low self-esteem. I have worked very hard over the years to overcome my own challenges and reach a place of confidence and self-respect. I have learned to let go of other’s judgments and focus on who I am and what I want.

I have reached this place by recognizing the gifts I hold, the strengths I carry, and learning to listen to others around me. I have learned to take care of my own needs and I am now careful to find balance between my work, life and family. I use mindfulness strategies to calm my mind, relax and re-energize. You may often find me walking by the edge of Lake Ontario enjoying the sun, scenery and nature. Looking across the water often reminds me that life is good and the world is much bigger than my troubles of the day.

I live on the east side of Toronto with my husband of 16 years, my 9 year-old son and 6 year-old daughter. My family and friends help to keep me laughing and focused on the fun and joy of life!
